When running any website, you want to do everything you can to protect it. To start protecting your WordPress website, you should first make a backup of your WordPress database and your essential files (uploads, plugins, themes, etc.).

And do backups regularly in case of an emergency. If you make changes to your site frequently, I suggest doing backups daily or weekly. Without a current backup, you’re setting yourself up for potential website doom and failure. I shudder to think what could happen to your blog or website without one.

Why do I need a backup of my WordPress site?

Let me give you some scenarios as to why you should have a backup…

1. You’ve found this great WP plugin that’s going to take your website to the next level. You’ve installed and activated it. When all of a sudden, you’re receiving errors in your wp-admin area. Or you’re locked out of your own site. Now what? You’ll probably spend the next few hours…or days trying to figure out how to fix it.
2. You’ve been working with WordPress for awhile. You’re feeling confident enough to start making some changes to your WP theme. Or you add some special code someone told you to try. When “poof,” your WordPress site is blank. How the heck did that happen? Now you have to figure out how to undo what you just did.
3. It’s a bright sunny morning. You’ve had a few cups of coffee and you decide to spend some time reading your email. You find an email alert from Google Webmaster Tools stating that your site has been listed as suspicious and blocked. Holy cow! What does that mean? You go to Google and do a search for your domain name and you see this message, “This site may harm your computer.” You’re asking yourself, why does it say that? What on earth is Google talking about? My site isn’t dangerous. In reality, there’s something on your website that could potentially harm your visitors’ computers.
4. Then, your worst website nightmare comes true! You open up your website and the only thing you see is an ugly image of a skull and a message telling you, “You’ve been hacked. The Hacker Monster Ownz You!” You’re now in a panic. Your heart is racing. Your blood pressure is off the charts. You’re now screaming aloud, “Somebody help me!”

Everything will be okay…If you’ve made a backup of your WordPress database and your essential files. With your backup, you’ll be able to restore your website. My About page states firmly that you should always have the mind of a student so you will always be able to learn. The moment you allow success to instill arrogance in you is the same moment you begin to fall…as the saying goes, “arrogance and haughtiness precedes a fall!”

Blogging has become become quite the fad with millions of new blogs being born daily. People seem to find great fulfillment in being able to express themselves to a worldwide audience at a low price or oftentimes at no price at all just by using the power of “blogging”. Yet even with this type of ease once in a while I’ll mention the potential of blogging to someone and they’ll respond with something like: “You mean I actually have to write something?!”

And those who have been blogging -even the experienced ones- occasionally catch cases of writer’s block where they cannot seem to think of one word to say despite their previous literary works of glory. So how does one keep the content flowing…and if you’re new then how can you come up with first award winning post?

Next up is something I found on Darren Rowse’s famous ProBlogger blog originally written by Neil Patel of KISSmetrics.com that does deal with writing. And though this type of writing is for “how to” posts (those articles that explain how to do a certain thing) the same concepts apply for just about any other type of post you can think of:

Great how-to blog posts have great content. But it’s never easy coming up with that content, which means you need to do a little research. Here’s a two-step process you can use to come up with ideas:

Visit your competitors’ blogs and see which posts generated a lot of comments and/or got shared a lot on the social web. You can put a list of headlines into a spreadsheet along with the number of retweets and Facebook “like” on each post.
Browse the trending topics on Tweetmeme, Google Trends, and Google News for the last week. Once you discover what people are after, start to think of topics that are related to the trending ones.

But don’t stop there. When you’ve got your idea nailed, read about a dozen articles and posts connected to your idea..

Neil also touches on one important aspect of using images that even I had not considered:

How-to blog posts by their nature are scannable because you are giving your readers steps to follow. But not everyone thinks that way or even designs it with that in mind..

Why are images important? Because that’s what people on the web prefer. Whether it is an image to open the post or a series of images throughout the post, images are much attractive to readers.

Another reason images are important is that for your readers who use a RSS reader to consume content, an image is more likely to get them to slow down as they scroll through their feeds..

Neil further briefly touches upon the important of headlines, but doesn’t go as in depth with it as Charlie Page owner of the Directory of Ezines does. Charlie approaches it from the angle of ad copy writing but isn’t a blog post title practically the same thing? Both have the duty of selling you something whether it be a product or a certain point of view:

When selling things on the Internet you have about three seconds to make your point or lose your visitor.

Click… BANG… they’re gone forever!

If your headlines are under-performing then it IS costing you sales. No doubt about it..

Finding images for your blog posts can be quite annoying and tedious at times, but yet we want them because “a picture truly is worth a thousand words”. And once we add a quality image to our actual written/typed words then our post becomes that much more magnified.

Now getting back to those annoyances…it is not just the actual searching for the images that becomes tedious, but searching for images in which we can legally use because of copyright laws. So although doing an image search on Google is a quick remedy, most of them are not legally free to use and as a result that perfect image you inserted from Google will only end up being deleted from your blog posts which makes you have to search all over again

Fortunately I came across a plugin called eBizzSol Photo Search this afternoon that eliminates the hassles of that and allows you search for great images right from your wp post-editor page! After installing and activating this plugin you will see a Flickr search box below the space where you enter your posts along with a drop-down box for selecting the size of the image you want. All you have to do is enter key terms related to your post, select the size, and “Shazaam” tons of images for you to choose from will instantly appear, then you just click on the one you want and it displays wherever you set your cursor to within the post editing area. It looks like this:

I did come across another similar plugin that added another tab inside the Upload Media option that allowed you to select straight from Flickr called Flickr Photo Post, but it wouldn’t display the image options properly although it seems to work other -it probably conflicts with other plugins I have installed already- so you can try that if you want

One thing I have learned about using WordPress is they just keep coming up with more innovative improvements. I just logged into my WordPress dashboard today then went back over to the live site and noticed an intriguing bar laid across the top of my site following me as I scroll..

..turns out this is one of the many features in the new WordPress Version 3.1 allowing for easier access to the inner workings of your blog in real time. The first thing I immediately like about it is the ability of quickly going to the widgets section as well as being able to post a new article faster. It even has a little graph showing my traffic stats.

And although this bar somewhat reminds me of Blogger.com’s infamous search bar, it definitely does a whole lot more making my blogging life just a tad bit easier
