To make money online many people jump right in before they are properly prepared. You know that to be a rocket scientist, a doctor, a brick layer, a construction worker, an office worker, a teacher there are prerequisites, things you must learn, before you can be successful, you don’t just jump right in unprepared.

The same applies to the Internet marketing industry even though there are unsavory people out there who’d have you believe it’s a “Walk in the Park” and requires no more than the belief that you can just do it.

And I’ll have to admit, it is a walk in the park compared to what you have to put up with in the working world punching a clock being a subordinate to someone who does not have your interests in mind, but there are still rules you have to follow and pitfalls you must avoid to actually make Internet marketing work for you.

Most people will not make a dime online and yet there are others who will make more in one month than most people make in a whole year. Why is that?

My answer begins with the age-old chicken or egg question, “what comes first the chicken or the egg”? Personally I vote for, well never mind, each argument you or I make comes back to the same old conclusion – I have no clue and I don’t think many of us do either.

But one thing I do have a clue about and know for sure is that to make money online you must first have Passion for the company products and/or service of any Internet business from which you expect to make money.

Passion in this sense simply means that you’ve researched and like the company and products or services. It is then that you translate that like (or Passion) into the education, excitement and work that usually accompany Passion.

I will have to say that many online entrepreneurs are so good at what they do that they ignore passion because they can sell anything. But I’m concerned about those of you who are not so knowledgeable at working an online business successfully.

Now, I’m not trying to make anyone believe that Passion is the only thing necessary. Because to be successful you must also have a good website, good marketing, widespread advertising, company support, effective keywords, and etc. Those things are often learned from the company you join – but sidestep Passion and you reduce your chances for success dramatically.

It therefore follows that, if you have no Passion for the company and the products and services provided by that company, again, you won’t attempt to do the work you are being taught…

Internet marketing work is typically not all that difficult or time consuming but it does take motivation caused by Passion to get you off and running with a sustained effort so that you won’t stumble.

You have a great resource in the Internet search engines to search about the Internet Marketing industry for business opportunities, USE IT!

Your research should uncover a company that you like and have confidence in. It should be solid, founded on great principles, and easy to understand with great products and services that are sell-able for which you can have Passion. If you don’t find it move on.

You can find the right opportunity containing the attributes identified above.

Comments like, well, that one sounds good and the compensation plan is excellent so I guess I’ll start that business – does not sound like a decision based on anything near Passion. And remember when you hear that an Internet “guru” does that, don’t be tempted, because as I said earlier they are experienced and can sell just about anything, without being Passionate about the company products and services.

Note: By the way it’s your goal to get to the point where you can sell about anything online. That end skill and goal is a worthy one indeed…

Remember, there are other steps you must make before you step into Internet Marketing but if you don’t first find the right company products and services to be passionate about, all of those other steps may just cause you a lot of frustration instead of bringing you great success.

Not being Passionate about a company and products and services that has market proof that it will sell is a pitfall you simply must avoid.

In internet marketing (the niche that I know best) as well as many other online niches, it’s often difficult to tell who the genuine experts are

That’s important because it makes it difficult to know who to take advice from.

The danger is that you will spend months, or even years, following the advice of someone who either sells you his theory, or who just makes up something that sounds plausible, and doesn’t even care if it’s accurate… as long as it sells.

Yes, there ARE people who will sell you anything and don’t care if it works, but I very strongly believe that they are a tiny minority.

There are also those who believe that you will not buy their products unless they “fake it until you make it.” Many of these people may actually have really good intentions, but since they believe that they have to pretend to be something that they are not, they can be a real threat to your success.

The fake it till you make it types often blur the lines as to what they are actually qualified to teach you. Their perceived dilemma is that they feel that they HAVE TO fake it.

Several years ago, in an interview, I asked my friend and mentor, Rich Schefren, how one overcomes this. Rich explained that it’s as simple as being your authentic self. Identify what you ARE qualified to teach, identify the audience that does want to learn that, and sell to them.

Rich’s advice really boiled down to merely acknowledging that your potential audience members are at all different levels along the learning curve, and you just need to focus on the ones who need the level of guidance that you are genuinely qualified to deliver.

The next pretend expert that you need to be aware of is “the dreamer” who understand on a certain level but have never DONE anything and therefore isn’t 100% certain that what they offer to teach you WORKS. They’ve STUDIED a lot, but they haven’t physically verified what they believe to be true.

These are you armchair quarterbacks, your armchair copywriters, and your armchair marketing experts

I honestly think that many of the armchair experts are most dangerous to themselves. I’ve encountered dozens of them over the years who had studied the same materials that I had, and knew it well enough that they frequently quoted the same people that I did… and often even finished my sentences when I tried explaining something to them.

I say that they were a danger to themselves, because they never moved beyond the knowing stage into the implementation stage, so they could never earn a living even though they understood how! I honestly believe that they were afraid to actually do something, or they were dabbling in too many different things to take any one thing through to completion.

Either way, these are the experts who, based upon being old-timers who have put in the time learning, should be very successful. Yet, they are STUCK at just knowing and won’t acknowledge that they MUST move beyond that.

Then you have the newbie who listens, learns and applies. Some of them move up the ladder very rapidly, and are at the top of the “expert ladder” in 1/10th of the time that others take, and they ARE genuine experts.

Two quick examples of these “doers” are Russell Brunson and Ryan Deiss

I remember when Russell was a college student, wrestling, and then starting to raise a family. He was on the Warrior Forum, aggressively learning, testing, and DOING. Not that much later, I could see that Russell had hit six-figures, and then seven-figures.

I first notice Ryan Deiss in December 2002, when he was an attendee at the very first seminar that ever attended (and spoke at). I don’t believe that he was even 20 years old yet, and he sat there taking and organizing copious notes. He asked deep, relevant questions.

Ryan has now probably surpassed most of my fellow speakers who graced the stage during that era. Ryan now has other very successful guru’s working for his companies

I’m compelled to warn my readers to be aware of the pretend experts and dreamers, but I’m equally as compelled to point out what sets the doers apart!

The “snakes in the grass” will always exist, and part of the reason that they will even thrive is because of customer greed. Greed causes people to make very poor choices.

FEAR also causes people to make poor decisions, and I believe that is what keeps more people who have the knowledge from becoming doers!

To become one of the successful doers, you have to actually, REALLY believe that it is possible. Then you have to believe that it is possible for you.

For me personally, I grew to believe that it was possible, after spending a lot of time hanging around with, and even masterminding with, others who actually walked-the-walk

I grew to believe that it was possible for me after observing that many of the ULTRA successful people that I hung around were really quite ordinary in most respects. I would even dare say that some were of below average intelligence… and I even know that they would say this about themselves.

The differences are:

1) You have to give yourself permission to actually become successful.

2) You need to work on your mindset, because “going big” is largely mental. Once you have the correct mindset, then it JUST HAPPENS.

I know this to be true because that has been my experience. I grew up on government subsistence (welfare) surrounded by poverty and no real mega-successful role models. I did have several teachers who lovingly challenged and inspired me.

I had my big breakthrough after hanging around the ultra successful, and being bathed in their mindset.

They also taught me that the rich and ultra-successful were not necessarily “evil”

That “flow” started me and many of my friends along a path that made success destined to happen. It also programmed us to always be successful even if we occasionally suffer setbacks… because we now understand the path and have that essential mindset.

The final ingredient for me was being actually mentored by an individual who showed me how I was really the ONLY person who could hold me back, and then how to get out of my way and allow unimagined success to flow into my life.

When you think of tracking, you probably think of tracking the response to your various ads and promotions to determine which of them are profitable and which are just a big waste of time and money. This is all very important — in fact it is one of the most important keys to your success.

But there’s a lot more to tracking than that. You see, your tracking efforts should not stop once a visitor responds to one of your ads or promotions. In fact, no matter how a person stumbles across your site it’s just as important to track their footsteps as it is to track how they found you.

That’s right, I’m talking about tracking what people do once they arrive at your website. Here’s a simple example …

Say a person arrives at your homepage, reads a paragraph or two, and then leaves. A few minutes later another visitor arrives and does the same thing. Ten minutes later another visitor shows up, he or she pokes around for a few minutes but they too ultimately leave without exploring much.

You probably don’t realize it, but chances are this is going on lots more than you think. For one reason or another, the majority of people visiting your site are probably leaving without doing whatever it is that you want them to do.

As Internet marketers we tend to think that everyone who arrives at our website is going to read every word on every page. Then they will  download our free e-book, subscribe to our e-zine, purchase our product, or do whatever else it is we want them to do. After all, who in their right mind is not going to be interested in what we’re offering. Right?

Unfortunately that’s just not the case … some people just won’t be interested in what you are offering at your site. And there’s nothing you can do about that. Even if you are attracting “targeted” visitors to your website, not every dog owner is going to buy your book on dog training.

==> Why You’re REALLY Losing Money…

The real problem however, is when people who ARE interested in what you’re doing don’t take the action you want them to take once they arrive at your website. Maybe they got lost, maybe they got confused, maybe they were about to order your product but bailed out at the last minute when they saw your order form, or maybe there was some other problem.

Trust me, you are losing money right now for no reason other than the fact that your website is not as good as it could be. And this applies to every single site on the web. Even ours, and yes, even sites like Microsoft.com and Yahoo.com.

A website is never “finished” and that’s why savvy marketers are constantly tweaking their websites to try to increase the response to their various offerings. Tweaking headlines, re-writing sales copy, removing graphics, adding graphics, changing the navigational system, etc. … these are all things that most webmasters are doing practically every single day in order to convert visitors into more revenue.

==> Don’t Do It Blindly, Let Me Give You The Secret…

But the problem is that most people do this blindly, basing changes on their opinions of how it may affect the behavior of visitors once they arrive at their website. And let me tell you right now, this is NOT how to do it.

Just because you think one headline is better than another doesn’t mean that your visitors will respond better to it. In fact, it usually works out exactly the opposite — the headline you think is best will probably generate LESS of a response than the one you were using before!

Say you have a simple three-page direct sales website. On the homepage you have a headline, some introductory sales copy, and a link to the next page which contains your main salesletter. Your main salesletter really “sells” your product or service, and then links to your order form.

After awhile you notice that you are not getting nearly as many orders as you think you should be getting based on the amount of targeted traffic your site receives. The problem could be with your homepage, your salesletter, your order form, or a combination of any of these. How in the world are you going to figure out where the problem lies?

==> No Guess Work Needed…

You could do what most people do — take a guess — and base your changes on that. But chances are you will not guess the right answer, and your sales and profits will still be slim. What’s worse is that you may end up making things worse, in which case your sales and profits would actually decrease!

Guessing is no way to run a business. It’s what most people do, and it’s one of the big reasons that most people are not making much money. Basing your marketing decisions on your own opinions, or guesswork, is a sure-fire way to go broke.

Now, on the other hand, if you had a proper tracking system in place it would be relatively easy to solve your problem. Starting with the homepage, you could focus on tweaking one page at a time until your sales were where they ought to be.

Perhaps your tracking system tells you that for every 100 visitors to your homepage, only 5 of them are clicking the link that takes them to your main salesletter. That is a serious problem! But since you have an exact baseline figure to work with, it wouldn’t be too hard to improve upon.

Simply tweak your headline, copy, etc. and then reset your tracking system to see what the new results are. If after your changes more than 5 out of every 100 visitors is going to your salesletter, then your changes helped and you can repeat the process again. What if this time only 1 out of 100 visitors clicks to your salesletter? Simple! Undo the changes and start over at square one.

Maybe after doing this for a week you’re now seeing that for every 100 visitors, 42 are now clicking to your salesletter. That’s much better, and you are probably happy with that. Great! Move on to the salesletter and repeat the process.

If only 5 out of 100 people that reads your salesletter actually clicks to the order form, you need to tweak your salesletter. It may take a little while, but as long as you are tracking everything you will know what is working and what is not. Finally, work on your order form the same way.

==> How To Increase Your Profits By At Least 100%-500%!

When all is said and done, the average site will probably be able to increase their overall profits by at least 100-500%. Just think what it would do to your bottom line if you could increase your profits 100-500% with your existing traffic!

The above example is really just the tip of the iceberg. With a good tracking system you can track and improve the response to almost anything this way — downloads of your ebook, ezine subscriptions, software downloads, a general lead generation system, surveys, etc. etc.

You read that right.

I’ve told Google to push off.

Stop spidering me.

I no longer want my online business to depend on its ever changing whims as to what makes a good or bad ranking.

I don’t want to spend time collecting thousands of backward links then find that they are probably worthless because the anchor text does not contain a suitable keyword, or the site does not have sufficient page rank, or whatever the  latest algorithm is.

I don’t want to buy expensive cloaking tools and run the risk of penalization.

I don’t want to be bothered about whether a domain has a static or dynamic IP address or have to use different hosts to make a network of minisites.

What’s that you say ? You don’t need fancy tricks – just provide good relevant content.

My answer ?

Nonsense.

I have a huge content site devoted solely to ClickBank, the only one of its kind.

If you wanted to find the most relevant content for a search on the keyword ‘ClickBank’ don’t you think that would be at the top ?

Well Google used to agree with you.

It was ranked number 2, with only ClickBank.com itself at number one.

Today it is ranked … wait for it … number 426.

It is beaten out of sight by sites which have nothing to do with clickbank but happen to mention that keyword once.

I asked a search engine expert about this and he suggested that it was due to keyword density, in other words too many mentions of the word ClickBank.

Well that has to be the case – the site is after all a ‘Complete Guide to ClickBank’

His advice – try replacing the word clickbank occasionally e.g. use ‘CB’.

No way.

That was the last straw and became the inspiration for me to develop a revolutionary approach to getting traffic.

Many times we as successful people get into the habit of saying “I” alot and we pat ourselves on the back when we attain certain goals. But is it “I” who truly deserves to be thanked?

Let’s take for example internet marketing. I knew next to nothing about it when I first started out. While doing a Google search around late 2003 I came stumbled across an ad saying I could make money without my own product or a website. I’d simply promote one of their already successful products using their sales material and they would split the profits with me. Thus,began my launch into affiliate marketing.

I also found a service that would email my sales message to a large email list of people who already had an interest in what I had to offer.

-SIDENOTE: Of course this was before SPAM laws got tight

To my surprise,I actually made a few sales so then it was on! Too bad that particular affiliate offer turned out to be trash.

Nevertheless,further studies made me realize I had to have my own website,but I didn’t know anybody in that field and even if I did I had no funds to hire them plus I didn’t even have a computer.

-SIDENOTE: I used the local college campus computers and the workers there used to clown me because I put in more hours than them

I searched the web for hours and days at a time to learn as much as I could. Finally,I built my first site and even taught myself all those tedious HTML code changes just from visiting some of my favorite sites and right-clicking to ‘View Source’ – which by the way turned out being the fastest learning method

Boy was I proud of ME…although sales were less than desireable.

I tried Google adwords and went broker than I already was…still nothing. “Build it and they will come” was the naive belief I had back then. After all,I had put in so many long hours at this thing being self-taught while everyone I was reading about obviously already had capital to spend big on advertising and seminars.

-SIDENOTE: I still have yet to go to an internet marketing seminar

But what was I missing?

I wasn’t interacting with others in internet marketing…I wasn’t interacting with potential customers through forums and other sites…I wasn’t even building a list! True wealth -as I ended up learning through spiritual studies- is a cooperative effort. No billionaire got there solely all by himself. Their wealth came from investing into and with 100′s even 1,000′s of other people whether it was with or without their knowledge.

My point: they had to socialize with certain “communities”.

Why? Because no man is an island. Those other people in those communities are the ones who deserved to be patted on the back. Nowadays in this web2.0 era all we hear about are the many “communities” we can join which has allowed many small-timers to explode their sales. This would not have been possible for someone with small budget,small knowledge, and BIG ego to accomplish. My new belief quickly changed to: if you start socializing with internet communities,then they will come! Just remember No Man Is An Island.
