Getting quality website traffic will always be the main component of making money online and since this blog is very much a “share as I learn type” type of thing like I mentioned on the About Page, I’d like to share some things I’ve learned which just also happens to be the same lessons learned by some of the net’s top bloggers such as bonafied six figure earner Yaro Starak who shares in an interview at Rob’s Web Tips his most coveted secrets on how he first started getting traffic:

When you’re starting the blog you have all this stuff in your head that doesn’t exist yet so one of the first things I did was just trying to get all of it, or, at least, a lot of it from your head onto the blog and that I enjoyed doing, so I didn’t mind writing daily, that was important.

And, beyond that, so, assuming the content was handled, I just kept, basically doing research. So I looked around and saw what other bloggers were doing to build traffic and I was getting Ideas; I learned about things like, ok, you can get guest articles published from other people’s blogs. So, I’ve submitted a few guest articles on some other blogs. I’ve always been a fan of leaving really big comments on other blogs and also participating in forums. So, at the end of every day, or if I was on my night shift at that part time job, I’d go to a forum related to my blog and I’d just go in there and start topics or reply to topics and I’d read the top 5 blogs in my industry and lave some really good comments about their work. I may even read an article on their blog and go and write a response to it on my blog and link to it. And that would get their attention too because you send a track-back and they go: “ok, this guy’s reading my blog and he’s got something smart to say”.

So, with enough of that, eventually two things had happened: I started to get more search traffic, you know, it wasn’t instantaneous, it probably took 6 months to really get any significant search engine traffic from Google, but I also started to become, I guess, a face to some of the other bloggers in my industry who, at the time, you have to remember, were also just growing up with their blogs, they weren’t where they are today. We’re talking about Darren Rows, Brian Clark, I haven’t even heard of John Chow or Shoemoney; those guys weren’t at my radar at all..

Although I am no where near six figures yet, these are all things that I do with guest posting currently being one of my top priorities for getting even closer to that six figure level. And you absolutely MUST do these things as well especially if you do not have major bucks to shell out on advertising.

And even if you do have the marketing $$$ you still need to do adequate research(which is best done by going thru the process Yaro mentions above) in order to know where to properly allocate those advertising dollars.

Growing up as a youngster I can recall several sayings repeated over and over meant to explain certain phenomena in life – better known as cliches. An often repeated saying was “it takes money to make money” and I hated hearing this along with the other infamous cliche, “money is the root of all evil” when the very same ones saying these things were the one trying to get MONEY! I came to the realization that these sayings were not exact explanations at all, they were excuses used to pacify the feelings associated with failure while more truthfully these so-called failures are really just natural obstacles that come with trying to succeed at a particular endeavor.

Now upon immediate analysis it is somewhat of an oxymoron to state “it takes money to make money” because the end of this statement seems to cancel out the beginning leaving you with NOTHING which  ironically is what most of the ones using this saying have in their bank accounts. But after further thought, this statement actually involves the science of leverage. In other words it prompts us to invest a certain amount of money in order to produce more amounts of money just as a small amount of pressure on one end of a lever produces great lifting power on the other end. This is and has been the familiar model in the world for how the rich get richer.

But the obvious question remains lurking: how do you get that first portion of money…that investment money…the seed capitol

Many would say to get a regular job and save up some money for investing, but with the mundane yet necessary cost of living rising higher and higher a so-called regular job barely enables you to survive in a world that requires material money to get you need much less anything else. So in order to answer the above question and with this blog being the type of site it is, I will use internet marketing and the illustrious world of making money online.

The most important aspect to making money online and really in any business is attracting visitors who are willing and ready to buy what you are selling. In internet marketing industry terms this is known as getting traffic. Of course this means delving into the ways of advertising online be it paying for clicks, paying for views, classified advertising, email advertising(such as running solo ads, sponsored ads, and ezine ads), and/or traditional banner advertising. But regardless of these once you start studying the methods for getting traffic you will undoubtedly become seduced with the idea of getting FREE traffic. And it is this concept of free traffic that seems to bust through the myth of  “it takes money to make money.”

Let us briefly explore the main ways of getting FREE traffic to see if it indeed breaks the myth. In essence it involves you inserting your URL(link) on other sites that are already getting traffic in good faith that the visitors on those sites will notice your URL/link and thereby visit you. This equates to you commenting on forums and blogs that are relevant to your particular industry or niche, writing articles and posts then submitting them to the various directories, and/or interacting with popular social networks like Twitter, Facebook, etc. Basically any site that allows you to have your say along with including your link without having to pay a dime is a viable source of generating free traffic.

But if you really think about it and consider that the base definition of  money is a “medium of exchange” then you must understand that the sites you get your URL/link listed on is the medium you’re using in exchange for traffic to your site which you hope will make you some MONEY! However using this medium incurs the expense of time and creative writing.

So you still are using money to make money

And although there exists different software to bypass the manual process of getting free traffic along with the time it takes for positive results to manifest from it, you still have to pay for that software.

I once wrote an article for DiTesco’s blog called Starting All Over From Scratch that details what I would do if I had lost everything and literally had to start all over without any finances available. Eventually, due to the obstacles thrown my way from the intricacies of life itself, I had to do just that and am still in the process of implementing it (with a few minor adjustments). The one thing I’ve learned is that you’ll have to spend money one way or another. Utilizing free methods is a good low entry way to begin, but once the free methods begin generating some sums of physical money, then it would  behoove you to BUY some decent software and BUY targeted traffic from a few of the many reputable networks

And it appears I am not the only to have come to this conclusion…here’s an excerpt from an interview of top blogger John Paul:

Q. How were you able to build your traffic and do you focus allot on link building?

A. In the beginning I was broke lol So all my traffic resources were free ideas. I got into Social Media pretty hard from the beginning since it was free. I have continued to focus on SM,, and results have been great. I started early on, on getting ranked for search engines, mainly Google. Since it was free to optimize my blog for that.

I did article marketing, bookmarking, commenting, really anything tactic that worked I did.

Frustration has gotten the best of me as far as teaching internet marketing goes. Explaining the most basic principles of IM is like trying to teach quantum physics to neanderthal cavemen. And just what are those three basic principles?

Things like:

1. Learning the most productive ways of generating website traffic…
2. Actually getting traffic to your site or an affiliate site you’re signed up with and…
3. Recycling that traffic…

What’s amazing is that some of the ones I’ve shared these things with were or are already involved in sales of some sort. Not necessarily legal but this makes no difference because business is business. Whether you have sold dope, delved in the art of pimpology, or sold Amway products door to door the methodology is still the same as it is for making money online:

You must learn where the people who want your particular offer congregate and how to approach them so that they will not only buy from you specifically,but continue to buy from you over and over again.

So-called internet gurus might argue that you really need the right product, but if you know how to constantly pull people/get traffic then it doesn’t matter, you can sell anything. Just look at the history of some of the weird items that have been sold on eBay. This proves there is definitely a market for ANY product as well as a product for ANY market. And just in case you don’t happen to see a product for a certain market, then even better and more profitable for you to come along and develop that needed product!

Now back to those who have had experiences with illegal sales. Don’t you think it’s about time you reinvested some of your profits into something that will consistently bring in legal sales? I mean c’mon…you already know the three basic principles above:

• You found out where the potential customers who want the product you have access to hang out…
• You “posted up” in that area to let them know you have what they want and…
• Finally through using the right “talk game” along with a unique presentation of your product, you got those customers to keep coming back begging for more…

It is almost ten years now since I made my first money on the internet and there are a number of things that I wish I knew back then, when I embarked on the journey of making money online. 2. Be prepared to work

This brings us to the next point of working hard. There are so many promises of easy money online, but I repeat, if you want to make a living online, then you must be prepared to roll up your sleeves.

3. Set clear goals from the beginning

It is very important to have both short term and long term goals. Short term will help you carry out the day to day activities confidently e.g. set a goal to write five articles every week. Long term goals should be set quite high but should be achievable eventually

4. Build traffic through organic means.

Targeted traffic is the key to your long term success. Don’t even bother having adsense on your site first, if you have less than 300 unique visitors a day.

5. SEO

You need to know at least the basics of search engine optimization. Then use grey hat tactics rather than purely white hat tactics. An example of a grey hat tactic is by purchasing well researched high page rank backlinks . Remember that search engines will rank your pages first and not your website. So make sure that your pages are all well optimized. Strive to have people visiting particular pages of your website rather than just the homepage. Good keyword selection will enable you to rank well in the natural search engine results and also target people who are looking for information about a specific subject.

6. Use article marketing

Article marketing is very useful if you are trying to generate backlinks and traffic to your site, so look for well ranked directories to publish your articles. Be consistent in your publishing and eventually you will see traffic building up through the search engines

7. Forums and Web 2.0

Join a marketing forum and other social media to get a broader view of the market. Your signature link on the forums also acts as a useful backlink builder. It’s even been suggested by some that every post you make in the high PR forums acts as one backlink for your SEO efforts. So the more contribution you make in a forum the more backlinks you will get. Other members will also view you as an expert in your field and will be inclined to visit your website for clarifications and more advice, ultimately leading to more leads and sales.

8. Have a mentor

I realized late in my career that I needed to have a good mentor. By getting a good mentor like Stone Evans, I was able to shorten my learning curve by at least two years.

9. Build a mailing list

It is important to have a responsive list that you will regularly post to. Start the mailing list as early as possible. So if you have a six month old website and haven’t build a mailing list, start immediately

10. Research

You need to research on your market regularly and be prepared to keep on learning. Search engines like Google have continuously changed their methods and algorithms, so you need to adopt

Blogging is a thing I enjoy greatly and being a netrepreneur constantly drives me to scour through the blogosphere for intriguing posts…especially posts that match my current level of understanding on a particular subject I am interested in. The other morning I found such a post on the highly successful Problogger.net blog which deals with 9 truths about making money online.

It begins by painting often hyped up pictures of lavish livings and luxuries attained by a would-be internet entrepreneur – or as prefer to call “netrepreneur” – that I am sure you’ve heard by now if you’ve been on the internet for a while. Then the author makes an abrupt 180 degree turn with the subject matter and actually tells 9 hard-nosed, not so lavish, unadulterated truths. One which rang a particularly strong  resonance for me was:

“You’ll Fail More Than You Succeed…”

…although I tend to view these “failings” as the required feedback needed for modifying your strategies in order to get the results you’re after, but nevertheless, this is a reality you must come to terms with as opposed to the 6th Truth which one might find difficult to come to terms with.

But there is one frustrating factor I did not see on the list which brings us to a 10th truth: The Internet Moves Fast. Fast meaning the quick pace of evolving and ever changing information and technology on the net.

It seems as though just when you have finally understood one particular ideology or method, then up comes another one or an upgraded version of the previous one which without you’d be left behind like some caveman traveling barefoot while others speed pass you in their Ferrari’s.

I have experienced this time and time again whether it was with pay per click marketing, article marketing, or SEO. You have to maintain the attitude/mind of a student at all times and be quick at implementing your learnings so you’ll always be ready for that next level. And in the classroom of making money online it doesn’t pay to be a “C” student, you have to shoot for the honor roll and stay there!

Hmmm…with the above in mind, perhaps the 6th Truth is not so hard to come to terms with after-all:

“Some People Just Won’t Make It…”

Now I know that sound like a slap in the face for all the hard work involved with making money online (HARD WORK ironically being the first Truth!), yet unfortunately it is a Truth that can be applied to almost any endeavor in life.
